Open and direct communication
We feel strongly that direct, one-on-one relationships between a host and their manager provide an enjoyable and fun environment for openness, teamwork and productivity – where we all work together to help each of us and our company be successful.
OUTRIGGER has a long-standing “Open Door” policy where hosts are encouraged to raise any concerns immediately with their manager, or whomever they feel most comfortable without fear of retaliation. Hosts are also welcome to voice concerns to any member of the leadership team, including the CEO, so that we can understand each other better and help. Our commitment is to listen, to do everything we reasonably can to address the situation and to follow-up with hosts.
Open and direct communication among hosts creates a healthy, thriving workplace. Under a union environment, we would be unable to communicate directly because all concerns and negotiations must go through a third-party union representative. We would lose the ability to treat every host as an individual and as an important member of our ohana.

The Kelleys built their first Hawaii hotel, The Islander
The Reef Hotel opens as the first high-rise hotel on Waikiki Beach
OUTRIGGER Waikiki is built on the former site of the Outrigger Canoe Club.
Outrigger purchases Hawaiiana Resorts on Maui, expanding its presence beyond Waikiki.

Very impressed with the lady who delivered the workshop. So knowledgeable and genuinely took interest in her work. This was one of our highlights as we were able to do it as a family. Mary in housekeeping was amazing and went above and beyond. She made out stay great. Next time we take a vacation we will be requesting Mary to be our housekeeper.
The first person I met was John the person in charge of the valet service with about 30 years of service. you could tell immediately that his position was not just a job but a passion! John set the tone for our entire visit! He was kind,friendly and always a wealth of great information!
Saw housekeeping staff in hallway several times. Every time, they greeted us and asked us if we needed anything. Very friendly and helpful!
