National Beer Day - Maui Brewing Co Waikiki - Waikiki Beachcomber Back to all stories

Getting Back in the Swing with Brews and Grooves on National Beer Day

From Maui to Oahu, microbreweries are creating acclaimed craft brews that are inspired by the culture and tropical flavors of Hawaii and often only available here on the islands. Here in Waikiki, the brewpubs and taprooms are as welcoming as the beaches.

Outrigger and friends recently raised a glass (or two) to all things hoppy with a special event marking National Beer Day, an event held across the United States every April 7. Beer enthusiasts gather to toast the day in 1933 when President Roosevelt proclaimed I think this would be a good time for a beer after signing a post-prohibition act that legalized the sale of beer. This year we got in on the beer love with a little pub crawl and enjoyed an evening of beer tasting and saying ke aloha to friends, with a cold brew in hand.

At the Waikiki Beachcomber’s anchor restaurant and taproom, Maui Brewing Co., we were joined by its founder and connoisseur of all things beer Garrett Marrero. Garrett helped to revolutionize Hawaii’s beer culture by turning a beery dream into one of Hawaii's largest craft breweries. This breezy restaurant was the perfect spot to taste a selection of 36 beers, many with island inspired names such as Big Swell IPA and Pau Hana Pilsner (literally, After Work Pilsner).

Also on tap was the limited edition Two Tickets to Paradise. This tropical Tart Saison beer is a collaboration with Denver’s Crooked Stave brewery that commemorates Hawaiian brewing heritage. Infused with hibiscus flowers—which is Hawaii's official state flower—and locally sourced limes, it has a cool, bright-pink appearance and citric and floral aromas. Garrett dubbed this crisp, fruity brew as "extremely crushable," which encourages you to drink more than one.

While you might have to wait another year for National Beer Day, there's still plenty of beer awesomeness to be had with our Beachcomber Brews Bundle. Until December 31, 2021 you can get your hands on great complimentary gifts such as two pints at Maui Brewing Co. and your own half growler to take home.

Want a taste of our beer scene? Reserve a room at the Waikiki Beachcomber and enjoy a happy, or should we say hoppy, stay.
