If you’re traveling to Hawaii and looking for activities to take part in, one thing I always recommend to visitors is to take a crack at surfing. Surfing is an iconic water sport with origins that are rooted in Hawaii’s colorful history and continues to grow as a popular worldwide water sport. When you wake up to beautiful sunny weather and next to the warm tropical waters of Waikiki, it only makes sense for you to have a go at it!
Once you’ve made up your mind to hit the beach and jump in the water, you’re obviously going to need surfboards, and some direction and guidance. I’ve had the luxury of growing up next to the ocean and have been surfing for most of my life, so I’m not entirely unfamiliar with the experience. However, for many of you, this may either be the first or one of the few times you’ve actually gone surfing. If that’s the case, I recommend going with some surf lessons. In Waikiki, there are many options to choose from, but I always point my newbie surfing friends in the direction of Faith Surf School.
The school was started by former professional surfer Tony Moniz with a passion to share his love for surfing and his extensive surfing experience to all who wanted to learn. Moniz was a professional surfer for the past 25 years and has surfed the ASP World Tour (now known as the World Surf League), invited to the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational for 22 years, and is known internationally as a big wave rider and an “Ambassador of Aloha.” Moniz and his staff are all eager to provide a fun and safe experience to all those looking for an unforgettable experience. And of course I wouldn’t recommend any surf lessons without knowing about the service first!
Conveniently located on the beach end of either the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort or the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, visitors can check-in at the Faith Surf School counter where they can store their valuables and pick up their surf gear.
The staff are all very knowledgeable of the surrounding beach area and the surf conditions so be sure to pay attention to your instructor as they go over what you need to expect. The lesson is about an hour and a half long with the first 20 minutes used to go over what you need to know before you enter the water.
Once you’re in the water, it’s all about being alert and attuned to your surroundings. Follow your instructor out and be ready to enjoy yourself. Your instructor will make sure you’ll be catching waves in no time! You’ll definitely have a great experience and will be bragging to your friends that you surfed in Hawaii!
Faith Surf School isn’t just limited to surf lessons either. You can also take in Stand-Up Paddle Board lessons, Canoe Surfing, rent a board if you already know how to surf or even book yourself a private surf tour. Their hours of operation are 8am – 5:30pm daily and you can contact them either at (808) 931-6262 or firstname.lastname@example.org. So if you’re headed to Hawaii or if you’re already here, make sure you drop them a line and get yourself in the water!
