Luana Maitland

5 Questions with Luana Maitland at the Outrigger Reef

Marisa Guerro

Luana Maitland has been part of the Outrigger ohana (family) for 13 years. If you’ve visited the Outrigger Reef on the Beach during this time, you’ve no doubt been greeted by Luana with Na Mea Ho`okipa (“hospitality from within”) and unconditional aloha spirit. This week we caught up with Luana to get her perspective on what makes the Outrigger Reef such a unique travel destination.

Many people see you as the face of Outrigger Reef. What’s your actual role?
LM: I coordinate and manage Outrigger Reef’s cultural programs for our guests and manage the entertainment at one of our onsite restaurants, Kani Ka Pila Grille.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
LM: Sharing my Hawaiian culture with our guest and visitors!

hy is Hawaii such a magical destination?
LM: Hawaii is a place to unwind, to get away. It is a place where you can sit on the beach or beneath a tree and just relax.

Do you have any insider tips for our guests?
LM: Traditional Hawaiian music fills your soul. It is healing, and it takes you back to happy times or as we say, “to a sense place,” a place that you belong. The Kani Ka Pila Grille here at the Outrigger Reef has live Hawaiian music every night, 7 days a week. It’s a must do while you’re on Oahu.

What makes the Outrigger Reef on the Beach so special?
LM: The Healing Waters of Kawehewehe, a natural channel of fresh spring water, literally flows beneath us at the Outrigger Reef. This is where the Honihoni (“breath of life”) is used in our Hawaiian Vow Renewal Ceremony twice a week. This ceremony is free to our guests. Outrigger Reef is also a place where our nightly Hawaiian music fills visitors’ souls. It’s truly an extraordinary experience.
