  • Koa Wood Outrigger Canoes at Keauhou Beach Resort

Keauhou Beach Resort is home to two koa wood outrigger canoes on display in the hotel's lobby. The 21-foot Kekuna o Ka La, "The Rays of the Sun," was given its name because of the yellow streaks of color unique to the particular log of koa wood the canoe is made from. This canoe was built in 1991 by master wood carver Ron Barboza and six of his haumana (students) at the visitor center in Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Park. The carved image at the front of the canoe represents the god of war, Kuka'ilimoku and the carved image at the back of the canoe is of the he'e, or octopus. The 40-foot Kunane which means "the brother" is one of six canoes carved by John "Uncle Keoni" Mano. Uncle Keoni is one of Hawaii's leading authorities on koa canoe building and rigging. This canoe was refurbished by Pierre "Papa" Kimitete, and is on loan by the Mano 'Ohana and the Kai 'Opua Canoe Club of Kailua-Kona.
