Marine Biologist at Best Dives Maldives - Outrigger Konotta Maldives Beach Resort

Ciao from the Maldives! My name is Caterina Fattori, and I'm the resident marine biologist at Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort. I'm originally from Italy, but I'm excited to be living and working in this dreamy country. Here's a bit more about me!

During my academic studies I started to focus my attention on coral reefs and their threats. I decided for my thesis to examine two aspects that are damaging coral reefs all over the world: climate change and coral bleaching. For my Masters in Science, I carried on the understanding of this ecosystem. I analyzed what's known as, the coral disease. This is something new in the micro- marine biologist community, because it’s pretty unknown. We're trying to find out why, what and how this disease spreads in coral reef. For me, it was really challenging and fascinating to try and understand the roles of micro-organisms as bacteria and virus in the corals.

After my academic studies I decided to mix together two of my passions: diving and travelling; so I started to work in the diving industry. I worked as DM in a diving center in the Red Sea in 2014. I spent a wonderful year there, where I lived in a really tight relation with the corals ecosystem. At the beginning of this year, I decided to concentrate my attention once again on marine biology. Last February I went for two months to Thailand, Koh Tao, for a Coral Conservation and Restoration program, where I had the opportunity to apply some restoration techniques on coral reefs and practiced survey, too.

After the experience of the tropics, I went back to Italy to rediscover the underwater flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. This experience teach me a lot about my sea, but at the same time, I felt again that it was not enough. Because of this, and because I like the challenge, I decided to accept a big opportunity in Maldives. Now I have my personal "laboratory" just a few minutes from my room, where I can increase my knowledge in this ecosystem. As J. Cousteau said, & the sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever. This is also my daily experience. Every time I jump into the water something new keeps my curiosity investigating and learning. I hope to peak our guests; curiosity about the astonish reefs' biodiversity - but also give them the knowledge about the threats, that year by year, are damaging this ecosystem.

Please come find me at the Dive Center at Outrigger Konotta Maldives Beach Resort! My workshops about coral reef caretaking are fun for all ages. I look forward to seeing you soon in paradise.
