Konotta Island Coral Reef Conservation

"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."
~ Jacques Cousteau

Outrigger's OZONE program supports coral planting to nurture Konotta Island's surrounding reefs for future generations.

This important effort is guided by Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort's resident marine biologist Caterina Fattori. Caterina's love for the ocean has taken her to the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, Thailand, and now the Maldives to study the effect of climate change and other threats that challenge the health of coral ecosystems. Her experience with coral conservation and restoration is a perfect fit for Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort where we've partnered with Best Dives to initiate coral planting in our home reefs.

New coral beds are being created with reusable steel reinforcement rods where concrete tablets, seeded with new coral, are placed. Over time, an entire reef structure grows and flourishes. Existing reef structures are carefully maintained by controlling invasive species like the crown-of-thorns starfish. See the progress of coral planting on Facebook.

Guests can learn all about coral reef caretaking from Caterina at workshops designed exclusively for travelers to this exceptional destination. Workshops are informative and fun for all ages. Visit the Dive Center to learn more.
