  • Sunrise Seal: 17 Days Old

    Destination: Kauai

Because of waves breaking on the reef like these, the water inside the reef where the pup is learning to swim got a little rough.  And our pup doesn’t like it.

  • Sunrise Seal: 16 Days Old

    Destination: Kauai

On this day, when I arrived, mom and pup slept snuggled next to the plastic fencing we installed to protect them from curious dogs.

  • Sunrise Seal: 15 Days Old

    Destination: Kauai

I snapped this belly shot with hopes of identifying the sex of our new pup.  We cross our fingers for females–not because we don’t like males–

  • Sunrise Seal: 13 Days Old

    Destination: Kauai

Sometimes when I arrive at sunrise, the seals are already in the water swimming and foraging.  Other days, they’re still sacked out on the beach, preferably near a tree or naupaka bushes–maybe even the pliable, plastic fencing we erect as a barrier to keep loose dogs away.  I wondered whether the seals would rise with the sun, but, apparently, that isn’t always the case.

    Destination: Kauai

Mom doesn’t like visitors who get too close.  This is how she responds when a male encroaches.  This is also how she’d respond to us, if we ventured near.

  • Sunrise Seal: 9 Days Old

    Destination: Kauai

Here the Hawaiian monk seal pup is nine days old, and that frothy white mustache is milk.  For the first five to seven weeks of its life, the pup’s sole source of food is its mother’s milk.  While it fattens up, though, mom shrivels up.

  • Recycle Your Athletic Shoes at Outrigger Hotels

    Destination: Oahu

Yesterday, I trekked to a remote beach on Kaua’i’s north shore to check on a 15-day-old Hawaiian monk seal pup.  Along the way, I found the left shoe of a child’s pair of sneakers, a mismatched pair of men’s flip flops, the sole of what was once running, skateboarding or tennis shoe and a pink slipper a la Cinderella. You know how I feel about marine debris.

  • Sampling Tropical Fruits at Ono Farm on Maui

    Destination: Maui

Ono Organic Farms dragon fruit on MauiThirty-five years ago, Chuck and Lili Boerner left Honolulu for remote Kipahulu on East Maui to start a family-run, organic farm at a time when most farmers were selling their land to corporations and moving to town. “It’s actually staggering for us to even comprehend. I hardly remember doing it. You just do it because you love it,” said Lili.

  • Whale-Watching in Maui #2

    Destination: Maui

At 7:30 this morning, the sun glinted off the ocean like it was a field of diamonds.  Three minutes outside the Lahaina Harbor, Captain Karl of Maui Adventure Cruises nosed the boat northwest.  He had already spotted our first humpback whales of the morning.  Thar she blows.

  • Whale-Watching in Maui #1

    Destination: Maui

When I visit Maui, one of the first places I go is Maui Tacos. Thankfully, my plane touched down today just before lunchtime. After lunch, I traveled down South Kihei Road to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary’s education center. And on to Papawai Scenic Lookout.
