    Destination: Kauai

    Can you bruise your eyeball? Because I think I did. And the perpetrator was a giant moth. It happened last night. I was outside, with a backyard light shining, walking my two dogs before bed. I saw the moth, thought, Holy moly, that thing’s big, as it circled the light, and made a sudden detour like a missile—for my eye.

  • Canoe Surfing at Waikiki

    Destination: Oahu

    canoe surfing view of diamond head at waikiki beachAs if the parade of surfers on Kalakaua Avenue weren't enough of a hint, the waves marching toward the sands of Waikiki Beach were breaking on shore when the City Girls* and I met to go canoe surfing last week. And, then, first mate Buddy, with Faith Surf School, suggested we leave our sunglasses and hats on the beach where they were safe. All this as Captain Buddy added a couple bailers to our canoe.

    Napali Coast, Kauai, HawaiiA team of scientists are on Kauai scouting for Hawaiian monk seals. Some folks from the National Geographic Society are tagging along, toting Crittercams. They’re hoping to place some cameras on a few monk seals, so we can learn more about where the marine mammal goes and what it does when it’s not snoozing on the beach—that is, when it’s in the ocean, its home for two-thirds of its life. While my friends have all the fun on the beaches of Kauai, I am sitting in a convention center in Honolulu listening to talks and panels and presenters and keynote addresses.
