  • When Vacation Desire Strikes

anini beach on kauaiPicture this: A dog sitting patiently on a white, sandy beach, eyes focused on his owner commanding a kite and sailing across the calm surface of an ocean lagoon. A honeymoon couple sitting in beach chairs, their faces tilted toward the sun, the ocean lapping at their ankles. In the distance, a stream empties into the sea and a line of palm trees throws the sanctuary of shade, where several people, bent, sift through sand in search of shells. Children masked with snorkel gear giggle and squeal their delight in spotting, perhaps for their first time ever, up-close-and-personal, a sea turtle or, maybe, Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa.

  • Consider the Sailboat

    Destination: Oahu

diamond-head-buoy-runConsider the sailboat plying the waters off Waikiki. With its billowy sails unfurling in the wind, a bow pointed toward the wide-open oceanic spaces of points unknown, the sailboat evokes a certain set of feelings and passions and desires. There are few images as iconic.

  • Kona Coast Contemplations

    Destination: Hawaii Island

woman standing on beach looking at wavesThe sun painted a wide swath of glare across the Pacific Ocean as I scanned 180 degrees, left to right, left to right. There was hardly a ripple on the water here off the southwestern coastline of Hawaii (Big) Island, known as Kona. Earlier, we passed some pantropical spotted dolphins. Fishers trolled through the group of foraging animals, hoping to catch any fish that escaped the dolphins.

  • In Search of (Toothed) Whales off Kona

    Destination: Hawaii Island

Underwater photo of Hawaiian spinner dolphin by Bo PardauA team of researchers is plying the waters off Kona on Hawaii (Big) Island right now. Led by Robin Baird of Cascadia Research Collective, they are in search of whales. No, not humpbacks. But odontocetes—toothed whales. The research project’s objectives are plenty.

  • Kauai Adventure Day: South Shore

    Destination: Kauai

mahaulepu kauai coastlineIt was dark until 6:41 a.m. at 22 degrees northern latitude--Kauai--when the sun finally shook off the night and rounded our side of the earth. Rain fell. Trade winds stood at attention. One dog didn’t want to get her feet wet, and so I had to drag her, back legs stiff as 2x4s, outside for the morning walk. Then, the emails started. “Anyone have a weather forecast?” “It’s lookin’ pretty stormy down this way.” “It’s definitely Kona weather, no wind here.” “Should we cancel or just go?” “Let’s forget bikes and just go. Looks like it’s clearing.”

  • Boo: A Story about Ghosts on Oahu

    Destination: Oahu

Ghost stories + Hawaii. Not just for Halloween. I like to say ghosts in Hawaii are about a numerous as the chickens on Kauai. One man who believes in ghosts and can make you, too, is Uncle Joe Espinda, Jr. He leads an Orbs of Oahu tour. It includes stops at five sites outside Waikiki. They may all give you chicken skin, or what you may know as goose bumps, but they're not all bad. Well, maybe all but one.

  • The Descendants Debuts in Hawaii

    Destination: Oahu

This past weekend, the Hawaii International Film Festival wrapped with the Hawaii premiere of The Descendants, an adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings novel of the same name. It stars the “sexiest man alive,” George Clooney and opens nationwide on November 23rd.

  • Dark Night of the Shearwater

    Destination: Kauai

dark night of the shearwater postcardBut nights like tonight—the dark nights of the new moon—aren’t so great for the endangered Newell’s Shearwater on Kauai. Especially the fledglings. They fly for their first time around now, leaving their nests high in the mountains and using the reflection of the moon to guide them to the sea. On dark nights, when the moon is new, these fledglings mistake the bright lights of civilization for that of the moon. They circle around areas they shouldn’t be. Areas with electrical lines. Areas with complicated electrical arrays. Tall street lamps. Telephone poles. And exhaustion sets in. Collisions occur. Many birds, mostly chicks, fall from the sky.

  • Shiatsu & Massage Center at Waikiki Beach Walk

    Destination: Oahu

hula dancer hands tell the storyI believe in pausing for sunsets, preferably on the sandy beaches of Polihale or Hanalei on Kauai. I believe in pinot noir from Willamette Valley, Oregon, preferably Lange Estate Winery & Vineyards. And I believe in massage--any kind. Deep-tissue. Lomilomi. Hot stone. And, now, shiatsu.

  • Why I Write

    Destination: Oahu

I stole this title from Joan Didion who, herself, stole it from George Orwell. These are two decent names to include in any piece on writing, I admit. Today is the National Day on Writing. For the third year in a row, the Senate passed a resolution marking October 20 as a day to recognize writing. This comes at a time when many are lamenting the demise of the written word.
