Today, I drove to Lihu’e. It’s a 30-mile, round-trip journey that takes me past Kealia Beach—boogie boarders popped in and out of view as the waves rolled ashore. Through downtown Kapa’a—diners lined up outside Mermaid’s Café, famous for their ahi nori wraps. My progress slowed a bit as traffic funneled across the Wailua River bridge. That’s when I pulled out my phone and started texting. Yes, I drive and text. But, possibly, not for much longer.

Yesterday, I trekked to a remote beach on Kaua’i’s north shore to check on a 15-day-old Hawaiian monk seal pup. Along the way, I found the left shoe of a child’s pair of sneakers, a mismatched pair of men’s flip flops, the sole of what was once running, skateboarding or tennis shoe and a pink slipper a la Cinderella. You know how I feel about marine debris.

It won’t be a Maui weekend, after all. In an economic counter-move, rental car companies on Maui recently reduced their fleet. That means, they shipped cars off the island. I am sure they do this kind of thing on the mainland all the time. As seasons and travel flavors change, executives move their cars around like grocers use just-in-time inventory practices to stock shelves. Unfortunately, in the middle of the Pacific, when tourism picks up again, like it always does in February and March, there aren’t enough cars to go around.

My four-inch thick Webster’s Third New International Dictionary—which I have to dust off before every, infrequent use—gives the word’s definition as: LOVE, AFFECTION, KINDNESS—often used to express greeting or farewell. And, yet, aloha can mean much more than that.
