    Destination: Oahu

sea turtle hauling out on beach

I wasn't in Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore to surf. I didn't much care whether the surf was breaking at Jockos or not. But I did want to know whether Jocko's mom was around. Surfline couldn't tell me that. I'd have to find out for myself. I first learned of Audrey Sutherland when I read the February/March issue of Hana Hou, Hawaiian Airlines' in-flight magazine. According to the magazine, Audrey Sutherland has paddled an estimated 12,000 thousand miles along some of the world's most epic coastlines. In an inflatable kayak. Solo.

    Destination: Maui

view of humpback whale fluke off mauiI sat at Betty’s Beach Café on Maui overlooking the water in Lahaina. With one eye, I watched a pair of stand up paddlers wobble on stiff legs as they learned a new sport. A young girl in a pale blue bikini, white sunglasses and blonde hair pulled back into a pony tail got the hang of it. The guy didn’t. He opted to lie face down on his board and float. With the other eye, I practiced “stink eye.”

  • Poi Dog Blog: A Cowboy, Vanilla Farmer, Photographer, Philosopher, Whale & Dolphin

cute, little poi dog named luluAsk someone in Hawaii, “What kind of dog is that?” and they’re likely to say, “Oh, I don’t know. A poi dog.” Poi dog. Also known as “mixed breed.” Or, better yet, mutt. (I like how “mutt” doubles the “t” at the end of the word, a hint at the definition—a dog with an ancestry of more than one breed.) This column—Poi Dog Blog—as I’ve decided to call it, is simply a mash-up of articles I like from the Internet, all about Hawaii and written by a variety of authors. This edition shares stories on herding cattle, a Hawaii vanilla farm, whether Hawaii is "worth it," an amazing photographer and equally amazing tale of inter-species play between a whale and a dolphin.

  • 2010 Year in Pictures

Destination: Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, Oahu

In 2010, I traveled around the main Hawaiian Islands, exploring Oahu, Maui, Big Island and, of course, the island on which I live--Kauai.  I always pack one of my various cameras when I travel, either my handy iPhone, portable Canon G9 or my SLR, a Canon 20D with a variety of lenses, including a fun and funky Lensbaby, walk-around 17-85mm, and a super-telephoto Tokina 75-400mm.  I take way more pictures than I ever post on this blog.  Here, in a review of 2010 in pictures, are many of those images that, for one reason or another, were never published.  Enjoy.

  • In Loving Memory of Andy Irons

    Destination: Kauai

The signs started going up November 3rd, the day after Kauai-born, world-champion surfer Andy Irons was reported dead. Just 32, Andy had recently won the Billabong Pro Tahiti, and was awaiting the birth of his first child—a son, already named Axel.  The news reverberated throughout the island of Kauai in shock waves—from the local coffee shop, gas station and post office to text messages, emails and phone calls. And, of course, at the beach—Pinetrees, in particular, where a group of surfers gathered, slack-jawed and shuffling their feet.
