  • TSA Took My Salty Donkey Balls

    Destination: Hawaii Island

package of donkey balls from hawaii islandAnother TSA agent inspecting some other bag leaned over, looked at the plastic bag in Clark’s hand and nodded. “Donkey balls,” she said with a knowing tone. I smiled, embarrassed—but only slightly. “Those are for my husband,” I said.

  • Sharks, Shrimp & Pie

    Destination: Oahu

snorkeler in water at shark's cove on oahuI convinced my co-worker Andrea to kick off a couple hours early and take me to one of her favorite snorkeling beaches—Shark’s Cove, a few miles past Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. Destination: Kauai

Java Kai Hanalei signI am standing line at Java Kai Hanalei. A year ago, then Governor Linda Lingle signed a bill into law that made the possession, sale, trade or distribution of sharks and shark parts—that is, fins—illegal.

  • Kapaa's Small Town Coffee

    Destination: Kauai

Small Town Coffee in Kapaa, Kauai, HawaiiWhen Anni opened Small Town Coffee five years ago, the free WiFi was a big deal. Now, WiFi’s not the only thing Small Town Coffee has going for it. The coffee must be pretty good. According to her website, Sunset magazine thinks her lattes could be the best in the world. A barista behind the counter pumps out iced and hot coffee drinks—from the aforementioned lattes to mochas, cappuccinos, macchiatos and Americanos to espresso and regular, old-school brewed coffee.
