I have a question for you: When you go on vacation, do you make an itinerary? Let it be known that I am an inveterate list-maker. Thinking about what I need to do tomorrow? I make a list. Stefanie loves Hawai’i, and, in particular, Kaua’i. She was here last March with her mom. A mere 10 months later, she returned with her boyfriend. Normally Stefanie is a quiet, somewhat shy woman, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what she wants. When Eric and I invited the two over for dinner one night, I asked Stef if she had any special requests. She didn’t hesitate.

Outside the verandah of the Keauhou Beach Resort, turtles lounged in tidepools. An eel chased a small fish. The sun outraced fog for attention. In the open-air cupping room, ceiling fans powered by trade winds spun haphazardly. If you’re going to cup coffee, it doesn’t get much better than the annual Kona Coffee Cupping Competition, held every November.

Very much so. Eva serves up a beautiful tea tasting in the ohia lehua and giant hapu’u fern forest in which she lives in Volcano, Hawaii.

I am sitting on the lanai of the Keauhou Beach Resort on Big Island. On one side of me, turtles lounge in tide pools and the Pacific Ocean sweeps beyond the horizon. On the other side, five very serious people wearing aprons slurp, swoosh and spit. Loudly. It’s like a contest for who can make the most noise. You might think I am watching–and listening to–children, but these are adults. They’re carrying on this way, because they are judges for the annual Kona Coffee Cupping Competition.

Barrett De Santos at the Aina Nalu in Lahaina recommended Penne Pasta to us for lunch. And while I wouldn’t ordinarly put pasta and paradise together as a “must” for dining, I couldn’t ignore the hunger in Barrett’s response when I asked for a lunch suggestion. “Try the Baked Penne,” he said. “Or the Nicoise Salad.”

Blossoming Lotus was voted the “Best Restaurant on Kauai” by the Honolulu Advertiser and while I might debate that island-wide choice, I would give Blossoming Lotus the title, “Best Restaurant in Kapaa,” hands down. Because Kapaa was our destination of choice for the evening, I couldn’t resist recommending “The Lotus” to my three friends.
