  • Ansel Adams in Hawaii: Who Knew?

    Destination: Oahu

ansel adams islands of hawaii sitting on table in libraryAnsel Adams visited Hawaii several times in the 1950s on a commercial assignment from Bishop National Bank of Hawaii, now First Hawaiian Bank. Who knew? Not me, at least. From now through mid-January, a selection of his Hawaii photographs are on display alongside the paintings of his friend Georgia O'Keeffee. She visited Hawaii in 1939.

  • How to Get Your Very Own Handwritten Postcard from Hawaii

night photograph of diamond head photo credit kim steutermann rogersEarlier this year, I provided a bunch of postcards to be given away at a special event on the mainland. Recently, I received the leftovers, and I've been thinking ever since what to do with them. Well, I've figured it out, and here's what I propose: I want to send one to you.

  • My Summer Reading List

Here we are half-way through August, our backs starting to arch away from the looming long weekend that signifies the end of summer. It's not just school kids who hate to see the summer come to an end. Have you squeezed in your summer vacation yet? What about your summer reading list? Dented it? He's only two months old, but the little stinker is already causing a stir. A few weeks ago, his mother weaned him. As you can see from some of the photos in the slide show, he's a plump, little thing. At this stage in his life, he is exploring his watery environs and figuring out where to get his nourishment now that mom--and her milk--is gone. Earlier this week, he was reportedly behaving strangely, using his flipper to dig in his mouth, coughing, and gagging, repeatedly. I was asked to accompany a team to investigate and after careful study, we concluded he must have eaten something he didn't like.

  • Kauai Is More than Just A Pretty Place

    Destination: Kauai

It might as well have been Kauai High taking on Waimea in the island championship football game. There were teams, one dressed in red, the other in blue. There was cheering and some booing. Signs. The occasional interjection by a referee. The line to enter and partake in or witness the action started forming a good five hours before the doors opened and included passels of children, grandfathers in wheelchairs, mothers toting toddlers on their hips, brothers, sisters, family and friends. And in true Hawaii fashion, there was a big tent outside with food and drink.
