Not because it wasn’t a good story but precisely because it was a good story--and I kept giving away my copy. After purchasing three copies, I finally managed to keep one long enough to finish reading the entire book. That book was Hawaiki Rising by Sam Low, and as I do with most Hawaii authors whose books I read—and like—I reached to Sam to talk about his book and, hopefully, learn a few trade secrets in the process.

    Destination: Maui

I mean, who wouldn’t, after tasting John Cadman’s dairy-free, egg-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, a.k.a. guilt-free, lilikoi `ulu pie. I also discovered an appreciation for beer. Or, at least, the Maui Brewing Co., because of their commitment to the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. And I sampled some of Maui’s famous banana bread at Julia’s in Kahakuloa. But, alas, I arrived too late to determine whether I liked Julia’s better than Aunty Sandy’s in Keanae along the Road to Hana. Of course, that just means I’ll have to go back;-)

It’s comprised of one L-shaped room the size of a basketball court divided into areas using bookshelves as walls. The building itself may not be as inspiring as my childhood one, but I still love the Kapaa Public Library.
