I'm headed to Hawaii, Big Island to attend the Keauhou Beach Resort before it closes forever, and I will meet up with my cousin Stef for fish tacos at Huggo's on the Beach. That Stef's got things figured out. She's managed three trips to Hawaii within the past year. One to scout for her wedding. A second to get married. A third to honeymoon.
What I don't exactly is what I will do for the two days prior to the Breadfruit Festival. I have a few things in mind. I am feeling drawn to Volcanoes National Park. After three days inside Haleakala on Maui, there's something about hiking inside another volcanic crater that appeals to me--bagging Hawaii's summits. Too, lately, I've wanted to investigate the green sand beach at Papakolea. There are a few things I've already enjoyed on Big Island, including diving with manta rays and stargazing atop Mauna Kea, and lots of snorkeling. But I could always go snorkeling at Kahaluu again. Or Kealakekua. Or Honaunau.
What I'd like to hear is your stories about your experiences on Hawaii Island and, perhaps, they will inspire my next couple days. So, please share in the comments below. And you can rest assured that I will be sharing whatever adventures and insights I find on Hawaii Island with you right here in the next week.
As the author Anne Lamott says, "Traveling mercies." I've always liked that as a bon voyage saying.
