Sunrise Seal: 27 Days Old

Our little Hawaiian monk seal pup took a step toward adulthood this day.  If you look closely here, she holds a sea cucumber between her jaws.  She’s at that toddler stage where everything goes in her mouth.  Sea cucumbers do not rank highly as favorite snacks for monk seals, but, at this point, we’re ecstatic that’s she’s discovered them.  That means, she’s foraging.  And foraging is a skill all seals must master in order to eat.
