Sunrise Seal: 13 Days Old

Sometimes when I arrive at sunrise, the seals are already in the water swimming and foraging.  Other days, they’re still sacked out on the beach, preferably near a tree or naupaka bushes–maybe even the pliable, plastic fencing we erect as a barrier to keep loose dogs away.  I wondered whether the seals would rise with the sun, but, apparently, that isn’t always the case.  I also wondered whether mom or pup would initiate movement toward the water for their morning lesson in swimming and foraging, but there is no rhyme nor reason in that charge, either.  Some mornings, I watch the mom take a few humps toward the water, turn to look at her pup, wait, hump a few more times, wait.  By then, the pup usually realizes mom’s intention and it hightails it to mom.  It may take 10 or 15 minutes before they actually enter the water.  I think they like to wake up slowly, like me.  Other days, like this one, the pup initiates the move for the water, as if to say, “C’mon, mom, hurry up; it’s playtime.”
