You could say Eugene Fodor got around.  In 1936, the Hungarian published On the Continent, a guidebook about pre-war Europe.  During WWII, Fodor immigrated to the United States.  After the war, he headed back to Europe, landing in Paris, where he began publishing a series of guidebooks, each one specialized on an individual European country.  In 1964, Fodor moved back to America and focused his attentions on the United States.

When Fodor died in 1991 at the age of 85, the series of guidebooks that bore his name included more than 140 destinations worldwide.  Today, that number exceeds 300.

The guiding principles of Fodor's guidebooks are objectivity and accuracy.  This rigorous attention to providing readers with timely, fair reviews is why OutriggerHawaii shares many of Fodor's evaluations on Hawaii here.  Fodor's Hawaii guidebooks are updated annually and--this was important to us--by a stable of writers who are considered experts and live in the area about which they write.

You will find the words "Source: Fodors" next to all editorial on OutriggerHawaii which Fodor's has granted us permission to reprint.  Of course, places change with the seasons, in the blink of an eye, with the tide, as they say, so you might find a restaurant or activity that doesn't quite mesh with what you read here.  If that's the case, be sure to help out your fellow travelers and let us know.  For that matter, whatever your experience, drop us a line at  We love to hear from our readers.
