Iolani Palace
America's only royal residence was built in 1882 on the site of an earlier palace, and it contains the thrones of King Kalakaua and his successor (and sister) Queen Liliuokalani. Bucking the stereotype of the primitive islander, the palace had electricity and telephone lines installed even before the White House did. Downstairs galleries showcase the royal jewelry, and kitchen and offices of the monarchy. The palace is open for guided tours only, and reservations are essential. If you're set on taking a tour, it might be worthwhile to call for reservations a few weeks in advance. Take a look at the gift shop, formerly the Iolani Barracks, built to house the Royal Guard.
