With only 89 slips and so many good reasons to take people out on the water, this active little harbor needs to be expanded. There was a plan to do so, but surfers argued that would have destroyed their surf breaks. In fact, the surf here is world-renowned. The elusive spot to the left of the harbor called "freight train" rarely breaks, but when it does, it's said to be the fastest anywhere.
For centuries, Lahaina has drawn ships of all sizes to its calm harbor: King Kamehameha's conquering fleet of 800 carved koa canoes gave way to Chinese trading ships, Boston whalers, United States Navy frigates, and, finally, a slew of pleasure craft. The picturesque harbor is the departure point for ferries headed to nearby islands, sailing charters, deep-sea fishing trips, and snorkeling excursions. COST: Free.
South of Makena Beach, the road fades away into a vast territory of black-lava flows, the result of Haleakala's last eruption and now a place for exploration on land and below the water. Before it ends, the road passes through the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, an excellent place for morning snorkel adventures. The area was so popular that it had to be temporarily closed in 2008. At this writing it was scheduled to reopen in July 2014. Parts that remain open include the coastal area along Ahihi Bay, including the "Dumps" surf break. This area is the start of the Hoapili Trail, where you can hike through the remains of one of Maui's ancient villages. Bring water and a hat, as there are no public facilities and little shade, and tread carefully over this culturally important landscape. hawaii.gov/dlnr.
