Kokee State Park

This 4,345-acre wilderness park is 4,000 feet above sea level, an elevation that affords you breathtaking views in all directions. You can gain a deeper appreciation of the island's rugged terrain and dramatic beauty from this vantage point. Large tracts of native ohia and koa forest cover much of the land, along with many varieties of exotic plants. Hikers can follow a 45-mi network of trails through diverse landscapes that feel wonderfully remote—until the tour helicopters pass overhead. The state recently introduced a 20-year master plan for the park that included significant development (think a 40- to 60-room lodge in a sacred meadow), but after community input meetings, the plan was scaled back.

Kokee Natural History Museum. When you arrive at the park, Kokee Natural History Museum is a great place to start your visit. The friendly staff is knowledgeable about trail conditions and weather, while informative displays and a good selection of reference books can teach you more about the unique attributes of the native flora and fauna. You may also find that special memento or gift you've been looking for. Rte. 550. PHONE: 808/335-9975. COST: Donations accepted. OPEN: Daily 9-4:30. www.kokee.org.
