There I was standing on a board on the ocean off Waikiki Beach, concentrating on keeping my core strong but my knees flexible, as Barney from Faith Surf School had suggested. “You’ll be fine,” he said and turned to help a couple others learn to surf. I wasn’t really taking a lesson this time. I’ve paddled a stand up board probably a dozen times, but every time, I feel my limbs stiffen like a newborn colt.
It seems appropriate to consider the topic of balance during this time of year after we’ve survived one holiday and with another one looming before us. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Christmas tree decorations. Christmas cookies. Hanukkah festival of lights. Latkes. Dreidels. School pageants. Concerts. Caroling. Company celebrations. Did I miss anything? I’m sure I did.
And as I look back on November, I see a month out of balance and maybe that’s why it took two infections, bugs of some sort, to make me relax over Thanksgiving weekend. I canceled a photo shoot at Na Aina Kai botanical garden, my monthly docent duty at Makauwahi Cave and yoga with Maile. And headed to the sofa, snuggling with my two dogs.
Here, in photos, is how I spent my November—with the exception of last weekend. No one wants to see that;-)
Here’s to a balanced December for us all. Remember to breathe, go for a walk in nature, do a little yoga, and jump on a stand up board and go for a paddle.
