July in Photos

Stick with me here, as the month in review goes from end to beginning.

Yesterday, our newest Hawaiian monk seal pup on Kauai became official. He was outfitted with a pair of red, plastic tags with a couple letters and numbers, sort of like his social security number. He's only two months old, but the little stinker is already causing a stir. A few weeks ago, his mother weaned him. As you can see from some of the photos in the slide show, he's a plump, little thing. At this stage in his life, he is exploring his watery environs and figuring out where to get his nourishment now that mom--and her milk--is gone. Earlier this week, he was reportedly behaving strangely, using his flipper to dig in his mouth, coughing, and gagging, repeatedly. I was asked to accompany a team to investigate and after careful study, we concluded he must have eaten something he didn't like. I'm sure I behaved the same way as a child when I was given any kind of meat to eat. In fact, I'm pretty sure I behaved even worse. And my brothers have photos to prove it. Good thing that neither brother is on Facebook. (Although my mother is;-)

Earlier in the month, I spent a week on Oahu, attending the Hawaii Conservation Conference, where I picked up a slew of story ideas. In fact, the moth blog post was one. Little did I know days later, I would be attacked by one.

While I was on Oahu, I managed to squeeze in a little fun, namely canoe surfing with Faith Surf School, and night photography in and around Outrigger Reef on the Beach, where I stayed. I also toured Kanu Farms, where Shellee and Gabe Machado are, among other things, trying their hand at growing apples, plums and peaches.

The month started for me on Hanalei Bay, enjoying the Fourth of July.
